The North Kansas City Water Treatment Plant has provided clean drinking water since 1912 and underwent major upgrades in 2015, including new pumps, wells, electrical systems, SCADA enhancements, and modernized offices. The rehabilitation of this century-old plant faced challenges such as limited access for materials and outdated, unknown infrastructure. The facility’s layout complicated equipment installation, requiring innovative methods like custom monorail systems and specialized hoisting equipment. Identifying and managing old, undocumented utilities was a critical task, solved through ground-penetrating radar and detailed historical research.
MegaKC coordinated multiple short-duration shutdowns to maintain plant operation while implementing upgrades, carefully timing work during low-demand periods. Communication between MegaKC, North Kansas City, and Burns & McDonnell engineers was vital to overcoming unexpected conditions, such as hidden underground utilities and unstable soil. Through careful planning and collaboration, the plant remains operational and equipped to provide safe drinking water for years to come.
